How do you prevent wood from buckling in exterior structures?
Wood warping (bending or "spin") is one of the biggest problems with wooden decks, patios, and pergolas.
1. Choose well-dried wood
– ideal humidity: 10–14%
– wet wood will deform quickly after installation
– avoid uncalibrated or unfinished wood
2. Choose the correct fiber direction
Wood with irregularly oriented fibers has a tendency to twist.
3. Use metal stiffeners
– cornering
– metal plates
– U or C profiles
– long screws for fastening through the material
These reduce the risk of bending and twisting.
4. Treat the wood correctly
– UV varnishes
– waterproofing solutions
– special oils
– repeat the treatment annually for outdoor exposure
5. Avoid direct exposure to the sun without protection
Strong sun = heating → expansion → deformation.
Buckling occurs in most cases due to too wet wood, incorrect assembly or lack of treatments. The optimal long-term solution? Using metal slides — resistant, stable and without the risk of deformation.
